28 February, Erbil, Iraq
The pre-dawn quiet at the training camp near Erbil was shattered not by the familiar thud of routine mortar drills, but by the low, lawnmower-like drone of a Shahed-136 kamikaze UAV. For the German Bundeswehr instructors deployed to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to train and equip Peshmerga forces, the mission shifted in an instant from a standard advisory operation to a desperate fight for survival.
As the explosive drone slammed into the perimeter, local elements of the Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) launched a coordinated ground assault, attempting to overrun the airstrip. Caught in the crossfire of a volatile proxy war, the German soldiers and their Peshmerga partners found themselves forced to put months of theoretical tactical training into immediate, live-fire practice against a heavily armed adversary.
